Rotary Foundation

Arch Klumph circa 1916

The Rotary Foundation was begun over 100 years ago in 1917 when Arch Klumph, from the Cleveland Club, had an idea to create an Endowment fund dedicated to “Doing Good in the World.”  Through our Foundation, Rotary members have supported thousands of projects to provide clean water, fight disease, promote peace, provide basic education, and grow local economies. We’ve also been a leader in the fight to eradicate polio worldwide. The infrastructure developed worldwide to fight polio, has also helped in the worldwide fights to eliminate other dangerous endemics such as SARS, Ebola, and now Covid.

Libraries of Love

Trudy Marshall, the Executive Director of Libraries Of Love is just back from her recent, annual 6-month stint in Africa and presented her latest adventures to us in her annual update to Marble Falls Daybreak Rotary on Tuesday morning, Sept 21st.

After visiting Africa in 2004, and taking a few books with her to read, she was amazed when the African people she encountered were so taken with her books! She learned that people in Africa did not have Libraries and therefore did not have the access to books that we in America take for granted. Trudy decided to do something about that and Libraries of Love was formed!
You can also view her presentation on the Daybreak YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/Gp4hXDNH3GM

Burnet Chamber and Burnet County Update

On September 14, 2021, Damon Beierle, wearer of many hats, updated us on what’s happening in and around Burnet. To say Beierle “wears many hats” is an understatement. In addition to owning his own business, Double Eagle Entertainment, Beierle is also a Rotarian, Board Treasurer of the Burnet Chamber of Commerce, County Commissioner of Precinct 2, and CASA Board President.

Burnet Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center recently welcomed Allison McKee as Executive Director. McKee comes to the Chamber from Georgetown Chamber of Commerce. McKee has hit the floor running as there are a lot of fun things going on in and around Burnet over the next several months, including:

Llano Hospital Update - Now MidCoast Medical Center

On August 31, 2021, Hatch Cummings Smith, Jr., Administrator of MidCoast Central Medical Center (“MidCoast Central”), provided us with a status update of what has transpired with the hospital since MidCoast Health System took over management of Llano Memorial Hospital on January 1, 2021, and changed the name of the hospital to MidCoast Central.

Hatch grew up in Llano, Texas and was instrumental in ensuring that rural Texans continued to have access to affordable and quality healthcare through his efforts to keep the Llano hospital from closing its doors.

A passion lived out

The story starts with a young mother who works through several jobs only to find herself well into her 30's and wondering how to make a difference with her life. Not afraid of tough jobs, she had been a Child Protective Services investigator and then a conservatorship caseworker for CPS. In that position her job was to find a "forever home" for child victims of abuse and neglect.

Then what to do with her life? A mentor had posited to her "where do you see yourself in five years?"

Trudy's Trip

Posted by Gil Jones on Jan 27, 2013

The following was received from Daybreak Rotarian Brooks, who received it from Trudy Marshall whom we support in her Ugandan/Kenyan Libraries of Love mission.

Daybreakers,

Trudy is leaving on Wednesday for Kenya on a special mission trip.  This is new and separate from the Libraries of Love.  Once again Trudy has headed the call of the Lord and is off to do His will.

Below I have included a copy of her email regarding this trip.

We all need to keep her in our prayers.

Brooks

Jim Berg opines:  "Finally, Rotary gets the recognition it justly deserves! Our main focus of our beloved Rotary is the project conceived and driven by our 34,000 clubs and districts. This is a wonderful tool to support our ongoing drive to raise the funding to complete this important job : eradication of polio."  Learn more about the tremendous progress in killing polio.

Adoption Awareness

Posted by Gil Jones on Dec 10, 2012

Wow, what a program! Even as the hallowed adjournment time came, and passed, Daybreak Rotarians sat in quiet awe. Not one left the meeting. What passion: THAT is what puts the "R" in Rotarian.

The 4-way Test: It's history & meaning

Posted by Gil Jones
From the earliest days of the organization, Rotarians were concerned with promoting high ethical standards in their professional lives. One of the world's most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics is The 4-Way Test, which was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor (who later served as RI president) when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy.
